Antique Original French Officer’s Sword – Épée 1872 Pattern with Scabbard

Up for sale is an authentic French Officer’s Sword, Model 1872, complete with its original scabbard. This regulation épée was carried by French officers in the late 19th century and is a classic example of post-Franco-Prussian War French military sidearms.

Period: Late 19th century (Model 1872)

Model: French Officer’s Épée (Pattern 1872)

Blade: Straight, narrow épée-style blade with central fuller; retains has traces of corrosion that correspond to its natural age and signs of service wear.

Hilt: Brass guard with ornate pierced design and officer’s motif, wire-wrapped grip intac.

Scabbard: Original metal scabbard with single suspension ring, showing age patina and shows signs of ageconsistent with use

Condition: Antique condition. Blade solid the blade is strong, although with traces of rust, grip and wire hilt preserved; scabbard original. Collectors’ Note: The French M1872 Officer’s Épée is one of the last regulation swords issued before the First World War and represents a significant piece of French military history. This original example, complete with scabbard, is an excellent addition to any collection of European edged weapons.
