Civil War U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Saber – Marked WKC Solingen w/ Scabbard “Non-Contract”
Up for sale is an original U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry Saber, marked by WKC (Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie, Solingen, Germany). This is a “non-contract” import sword, privately purchased during the American Civil War and carried by Union cavalry officers and troopers.
Blade: Classic curved, fullered blade, strongly marked WKC, Solingen on the ricasso. Blade shows honest patina, light wear, and age-consistent handling marks.
Hilt: Regulation brass three-branch guard with integral knuckle bow, retaining original grip with lost wire winding.
Scabbard: Original steel scabbard included, complete with twin suspension rings. Shows expected field wear, and patina with wartime use.
Condition: Good solid antique condition overall. Blade and hilt are tight, markings clear, and scabbard sound. Honest signs of age and service add to its authenticity.
Dimensions: Overall length approx. 41 in.; blade length approx. 35 in.
Collectors’ Note: Known as the “Old Wristbreaker,” the Model 1840 Cavalry Saber saw extensive service during the Civil War. German-made WKC imports were widely carried by Union cavalrymen when U.S. armories could not keep up with demand. A highly desirable and authentic Civil War cavalry saber for collectors.
