US Army M1840 Light Artillery Saber

This American artillery saber features a curved steel blade showing a dark patina and pitting. The brass hilt has a D-shaped guard and a ribbed brass grip, preserved without its scabbard. Manufactured in 1865, this Model 1840 light artillery saber was produced by the Ames Manufacturing Company. Issued to Union artillery units during the American Civil War, it served as a defensive sidearm. The blade ricasso is stamped "Ames Mfg Co" and "U.S. 1865". The brass guard and grip show a dark patina, and the hilt remains structurally solid.
