This military sword features an etched steel blade, a gilded brass guard with floral openwork, and a shagreen-wrapped grip. The leather scabbard has brass mounts and shows minor scuffs. Issued to Union infantry officers during the American Civil War, this sword was imported from Solingen, Germany, to meet wartime demand. It represents the collaboration between American militaries and German cutlers. The blade is etched with patriotic motifs, including the US eagle, and bears the maker mark of F.W. Hörster of Solingen. The shagreen grip wrap is complete and secured by copper wire.
