RARE U.S. Civil War M1850 Foot Officer’s Sword – Etched Blade by F.W. Hörster, Solingen w/ Scabbard

Up for sale is a rare and authentic U.S. Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword, featuring a finely etched blade and complete with its scabbard. This example was manufactured by F.W. Hörster, Solingen, Germany, one of the premier makers of imported officer’s swords during the American Civil War.

Period: American Civil War (1861–1865)

Model: M1850 Foot Officer’s Sword

Maker: F.W. Hörster, Solingen

Blade: Slightly curved, single-edged blade with floral and patriotic etching; etching remains visible with light patina and age wear.

Hilt: Brass guard with openwork floral design; wire-wrapped grip intact with age patina.

Scabbard: Leather scabbard with brass mounts; wear consistent with service use, but structurally solid.

Dimensions: Overall length approx 36 in, blade length approx 30 in.

Condition: Very good antique condition. Blade etching crisp, hilt and grip intact, scabbard present with natural aging.  Collectors’ Note: The M1850 Foot Officer’s Sword was a standard sidearm for Union officers during the Civil War. Imported Solingen examples, such as this by F.W. Hörster, are especially prized for their craftsmanship and historical significance.
