British Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber
Very rare original British 1796 Light Cavalry Officer’s saber, complete with its original scabbard. One of the most iconic and sought-after British cavalry sabers, widely used during the Napoleonic Wars and later periods. The saber measures 33 1/4" overall with a 27 1/2" blade that is etched with descending crescents. There are no makers mark on the blade. Gilded brass hilt with spade langets and drop disk quillon. Well articulated lion head pommel tops a reverse P guard. grip is of an off white organic material and has crosshatching throughout. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade is worn with notable pitting. Hilt shows wear and retains portions of its original gilded finish. Grip has a tiny loss on one edge. Scabbard mounts retain a trace of gilded finish, and the body shows heavy wear but remains solid. The saber features an original bone grip, showing natural age-related wear and patina consistent with its age. The blade is of classic 1796 form, with expected service wear, surface marks, and patina from time and use, but remains structurally solid. The hilt and guard retain strong detail, and the overall balance and form are correct for period manufacture. This is a genuine antique military edged weapon, not a reproduction, and a highly desirable piece for collectors of British, Napoleonic, and cavalry arms.
