Offered for sale is a very rare, original World War I German Seitengewehr 98 Ersatz combat bayonet, produced for use with the Gewehr 98 rifle. Ersatz bayonets were manufactured during WWI as simplified, wartime expedient weapons to meet the enormous demand at the front and are now highly sought after by collectors.

This example features the characteristic all-steel construction, lacking the traditional grip scales, which is typical of Ersatz production. The blade shows honest wartime wear, surface marks, and patina consistent with age and field use. It remains straight and structurally sound.

The hilt and locking mechanism appear intact and functional. Any visible markings are period-correct and consistent with WWI German military manufacture (please review photos for exact details).

Ersatz bayonets saw extensive frontline service and were produced in many variations, making surviving examples an important part of German WWI military history.
