This early nineteenth-century officer's sword features a slightly curved steel blade with etched patriotic motifs. The hilt is defined by a cast brass eagle-head pommel and a ribbed bone grip. The blade exhibits minor spotting and a light grey patina. Produced by Horstmann & Sons, this sword represents the Federal period of American military design. Eagle-head swords were highly popular among infantry and cavalry officers during the War of 1812 and the subsequent decades. The knuckle guard features ornate casting with floral decorations. The sword is complete with its original brass-mounted leather scabbard, showing minor cracks from age.
