This original replacement part is a cast brass knuckle-bow and crossguard for a dress sword. The brass surface exhibits a dark aged patina with remnants of gilding in the crevices. The guard is free of cracks but shows minor surface scratches. This component was manufactured in Germany or Austria between the First and Second World Wars. It was used on ceremonial dress swords carried by army officers during diplomatic and formal military events. The knuckle-bow features ornate oak leaf relief carvings and a slotted opening for a sword knot. The central block has a hole for the blade tang.
