US M1870 Navy Rifle Sword Bayonet
Very Rare U.S. M1870 Navy Rifle Sword Bayonet – Ames Co., Chicopee – USN – w/Scabbard
Offered for sale is a very rare, original U.S. Model 1870 Navy rifle sword bayonet, manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, one of the foremost American edged-weapon makers of the 19th century. This pattern was produced specifically for the U.S. Navy (USN) and saw limited service, making surviving examples highly desirable.
The sword bayonet features the correct long blade with fuller, bearing period markings consistent with Ames manufacture and U.S. Navy acceptance (please refer to photos for exact markings). The blade shows honest age-related wear, light surface marks, and patina consistent with service use, while remaining straight and structurally sound.
The hilt and guard are intact, with expected wear from age and handling. The locking mechanism appears functional. The scabbard is included and shows typical wear and patina consistent with its age and service history.
Due to limited production and naval-only issue, the M1870 Navy rifle sword bayonet is considered one of the scarcer U.S. post–Civil War edged weapons.
A fine and historically significant piece for collectors of U.S. Navy, post–Civil War, or American military edged weapons.
Please review all photos carefully, as they are an important part of the description. If you have any questions, feel free to ask before bidding or purchasing.
