This heavy sword bayonet features a long, slightly curved steel blade with a single fuller. The hilt is made of cast brass with a fish-scale grip and a steel locking mechanism. The blade shows minor grey spotting. Manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company in Chicopee, Massachusetts, this bayonet was designed for the US Navy. It was issued for use on rolling block rifles during the post-Civil War Indian Wars. The blade is stamped with the Ames Co. maker mark and the USN inspection stamp on the ricasso. It is accompanied by its brass-fitted leather scabbard.
