This naval-style short sword features a straight, single-edged steel blade with a wide fuller. The hilt is composed of a brass basket guard and a ribbed brass grip. The blade surface shows moderate grey patina and light pitting. Produced at the Artilleria Nacional factory in Toledo, Spain, this sword was designed for naval or colonial service. Often referred to as a corsair sword, it was carried by boarding crews during the mid-nineteenth century. The blade is stamped with the Toledo arsenal mark and the production year. The sword is accompanied by its original brass-mounted leather scabbard.
