An authentic American Model 1832 foot artillery short sword in excellent antique condition. The sword features a heavy, double-edged steel blade with fullers, a solid cast brass hilt with a fish-scale grip, and a crossguard bearing eagles. It is accompanied by its rare leather scabbard. Manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company, this pattern was designed for foot artillerymen and was inspired by the Roman gladius. It served both as a combat sidearm and a utility tool for cutting brush and clearing gun emplacements during the Civil War. The hilt displays the cast eagles on the pommel and inspector stamps on the crossguard. The heavy steel blade shows a clean surface with a few dark oxidation spots, and the leather scabbard remains remarkably flexible with brass mounts intact.
