Antique M1897 British Officer’s Sword w/ Scabbard – J.R. Caunt & Son / Edward Thurkle, London

Up for sale is a British Officer’s Sword, Pattern 1897, complete with its scabbard. This fine example was retailed by J.R. Caunt & Son, London, with the blade marked by the renowned maker Edward Thurkle, one of the most respected Victorian and Edwardian sword cutlers.

Period: Late 19th – Early 20th Century (Pattern 1897)

Origin: United Kingdom, London

Maker/Retailer: J.R. Caunt & Son / Edward Thurkle, London

Blade: Straight, fullered blade with etched floral and royal cypher motifs; etching still visible with patina.

Hilt: Nickel-plated guard with pierced design and royal cypher, wire-wrapped grip intact.

Scabbard: Steel scabbard with twin suspension rings; surface wear consistent with age.

Condition: Very good antique condition. Blade etching remains sharp; hilt and grip intact; scabbard complete with natural age wear. Collectors’ Note: The M1897 Officer’s Sword remains one of the most iconic British military sidearms, still in ceremonial use today.
